TECHNOLOGY

Johnston Racing believe that the use of Carbon Fibre in varying weaves is the superior material to build very stiff and on-weight racing shells. When cored with Aramid honeycomb, hull and panel stiffness is World class.
The hulls, decks and canvass of our "Elite"/"EXCALIBUR by JR" and "EXCALIBUR GOLD by JR" boats are built with a combination of unidirectional, plain weave and twill weave carbon fibre. When combined with thick sheets of honeycomb we can guarantee superior longitudinal and torsional stiffness. To maximise stiffness, the underdeck bulkheads are shaped to support the deck laterally and longitudinally. To ensure our eights are longitudinally stiff we have added a "vertical web". Under the deck we place a vertical bulkhead the full length of the cockpit. The triangulation effect ensures Johnston Racing eights are well within the recommended stiffness set by FISA. All cored boats are supplied with sealed bulkheads under the slides. This ensures the boat floats above the water when swamped, and provides a more boyant object to hold onto when swamped or capsized. The sealed bulkheads enable Johnston Racing cored boats to comply with the FISA flotation rules.

Recently we have released a fully moulded stern coxed quad scull/four - "EXCALIBUR by JR, SABRE by JR and CRUSADER by JR". The additional skin on the gunwales and flange in the cockpit area is designed to improve the longitudinal stiffness of the hull. Also, the white gelcoat finish is designed to improve the visual appeal of the boat, many years after construction.

The "ONE" series of singles sculls also has a fully moulded cockpit, canvasses and splashboard to improve hull stiffness and visual appeal.

All hulls are coupled with aerofoil aluminium wing riggers which may be attached conventionally with bolts or using camlock "quick release" technology . Fully adjustable camlock footstretchers can be attached directly to the rigger rather than the deck. This enables the balls of the feet to be attached directly to the blade in two places (through the footstretcher/rigger and conventionally through the body and oars). That way no energy is lost through the boat.

All Johnston Racing boats are capable of handling all weather conditions because of the extra height given by the aerofoil wing rigger.

Using camlock technology, riggers can be attached and removed from the boat in a matter of seconds without the use of tools. Also camlocks are used on footstretchers to simplify and speed up adjustments - forwards, backwards, steeper, flatter, higher and lower. It will not be long before we will have developed a fully adjustable boat that will not require any tools for making changes to footstretchers, riggers, pins and gates/swivels. The "tool-less" boat is not far away.

The hull and canvasses of all our boats are prepared with a marine grade white gel coat, however we can produce boats in any colour, its your choice!

An independent quality control process ensures all boats are of the highest quality and consistently finished from boat to boat before leaving the factory.
